Deutsch Resistance to antibiotics is an issue the WHO is dealing with since several years. Due to bacterial resistance, especially multi-resistance, a growing number of infections are becoming harder to treat as the antibiotics used to treat them become less effective.
This leads to longer hospital stays, higher medical costs and increased mortality. Bacteria have an exceptional genetic flexibiliy and can respond rapidly to environmental changes. By horizontal gene transfer, the antibiotic resistance can be transferred to other bacteria. Resistances develop where many bacteria live close to each other, especially within the protected area of biofilms!
